Meet the farm
320 Guest Ranch, founded in 1898, offers a blend of Montana history and modern ranch experiences. Dr. Caroline McGill, Montana’s first woman doctor, shaped its legacy as a retreat for outdoor enthusiasts. Today, it provides log accommodations, fly fishing, horseback riding, and meals at McGill’s Restaurant, all set near Yellowstone and Big Sky. The ranch preserves its storied past while welcoming guests to explore Montana’s wild beauty.
320 Guest Ranch traces its roots to 1898, when Sam Wilson homesteaded 160 acres along the Gallatin River. In 1900, his father Clinton added adjacent land, creating the ‘Buffalo Horn Resort.’ Dr. Caroline McGill purchased the ranch in 1936, becoming its transformative force. A pioneer in medicine and conservation, she brought electricity to the ranch in 1938 using a Cadillac engine—decades before power lines reached the area. Her legacy endures through the ‘Christmas Cabin,’ historic buildings, and the Museum of the Rockies’ exhibits on her life. The ranch expanded from 20 to over 200 guests under subsequent owners, preserving its Western charm.
The ranch offers log cabins with modern comforts, dining at McGill’s Restaurant (known for hearty Montana cuisine), and activities like horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking, and sleigh rides. Fly fishing casting lessons are available on a stocked pond, with equipment rentals for guests. The original Wilson homestead cabin now serves as the saloon, while Dr. McGill’s ranch house was relocated near Buffalo Horn Creek. New cabins maintain the rustic feel of early ranch life.
Nestled in the Gallatin Valley, 320 Guest Ranch is 12 miles from Big Sky Resort and 36 miles from Yellowstone’s West Entrance. The ranch enforces a drone-free policy to protect its natural and historical ambiance. Visitors can book stays online or via phone, with options for group events and gift certificates.
The ranch emphasizes historical preservation, sustainable tourism, and guest comfort. Activities are designed to connect visitors with Montana’s outdoors, from guided fly fishing lessons to wildlife viewing. Dining highlights local ingredients, and accommodations blend rustic log designs with modern amenities. The ranch also supports community efforts, such as donating artifacts to preserve historic mining towns like Virginia City.
