Vigil's Meat Market is a family-operated business that specializes in processing wild game and providing meat storage services. They have been serving the Espanola Valley for decades, focusing on quality service and customer satisfaction. The business appears to cater to hunters and individuals needing meat processing.
I dropped off my cow elk quarters at Vigil's meat market and met the owners a few days ago. There was just something odd about the one negative Google review that made me think there might have been misunderstanding, and not a theft. First of all...the "old man" who owns and runs this place is 92 years old. It's only an assumption, but in my book anyone that is still working at age 92 doesn't steal ... they WORK. I'm storing my meat in his cooler for a week or so and I'll process it myself. Vigil's charge for cooler storage is cheap, his cooler is clean and it had several other wild game animals in there besides mine. I wish the other reviewer had mentioned if he'd shot a cow or a bull elk. There is a huge size difference between the two. I estimate that my average-size cow elk will yield a little less than 120 lbs of processed meat. How the previous reviewer would know how much the elk weighed "field dressed" is also beyond me. Finally, I'm a "Gringo" living in New Mexico, I have a home in Mexico and I've lived much of my life overseas in foreign countries. As an outsider during that time I understand the paranoia that comes from not being from the same tribe as those around you. Take a deep breath, accept tribalism as natural and look for the good in all people. I think "old man Vigil" is one of the good ones.
Mr Vigil has processed all my meats for over 15 years. My meat has always been handled and processed like no other. I will always take my meat to be processed there. It's a family operated business. When Mr and Mrs Vigil retire, I will continue to take my meat there. They run a clean, quality service in the Espanola valley for decades.
I took my elk to get it processing, revived a call in 2 days that my meat was ready, asked the lady for the price, then the weight. She confirmed that I had 300 lbs. of meat, I arrived the next morning to have an old man tell me that I only had 120lbs of meat. I discussed this huge discrepancy between his quote and the actual individual who processed my meat to no avail. He stole 180 lbs of my elk meat!! This elk weighed 600 lbs field dressed, and I only get 120 lbs of meat out of it? Yes, I got robbed and the old man would not listen to my complaint, I would not recommend this place unless you are a friend, family, or Hispanic! 🤬🤬
