Dittmer's Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus is an old-fashioned butcher shop and delicatessen located in Los Altos, California, offering a variety of homemade sausages, smoked meats, and lunch meats. Established in 1978, the business focuses on providing high-quality specialty foods with a strong emphasis on German culinary traditions. Customers can also enjoy deli sandwiches and order products online, especially during holiday seasons.
8/19/25 Dittmer’s Gourmet Meats & Wurst-Haus 4540 El Camino Real Los Altos, CA 94022 I went on a Tuesday about 3:30 PM to browse their selections and buy some sausages. It's on the west end of the Village Court Plaza in Los Altos at San Antonio and ECR, so lots of parking. They also have a small dine in area and outside on the walkway for their deli sandwich selections. There was no wait at the counter when I was there. They have an extensive selection of fresh sausages at the counter, packed and refrigerated sausages and meats and frozen items, even game. I got a couple fresh Polish and Hot Link sausages to take home. Both had dense finely ground meat with slightly tough casings. The Polish was mostly seasoned with pepper and not very spicy, I long for the cheap good old Costco food court Polish Dog. The Hot Link was spicy and very good. I would prefer a less tough casing for both. I was happy with the flavor of both and can't wait to try some other selections. I will repeat.
Best sandwiches in the Bay Area. I ordered 2 sandwiches to go and had a fantastic picnic.
They don’t take Apple Pay, it’s a really cute store that has a lot of options but it was pretty sad because I picked out and sliced my deli meats, sausages etc-but forgot to bring physical payment and their hours are rather abnormal by the time I’d be able to go home and get my credit card-the store would’ve been closed. I came on a Saturday and the next time they’d be open is Tuesday :( This is mainly my fault but man I really wanted some livers/sausages etc, I’m just posting this in hopes they will add tap to pay/Apple Pay one day.
Been going here for 30 years and have not been in for a long while as I moved to the North Bay. I was down here on business and thought I would stock up on goodies. What Happened ?? It's sad and pathetic. Can tell it's gone way down hill just from browsing. The Ukraine sausage rounds are puny and sadly formed. Selection over all is dismal. Whoever is running this now is the wurst. So bummed...
Dittmer's Gourmet Meats and Wurst Haus in Los Altos is a true gem! Their fresh meats are top-notch, and the beef tongue is a rare find. Plus, the convenience of free parking outside is a bonus. Great selection of different kind of sausages and German products. A must-visit for meat enthusiasts!
Been going on and off for 6+ years. If you live nearby, it's worth checking out for smoked salmon, slab bacon, Austrian and German imports like manner wafers, emeukal throat drops, linden honey, rosehip preserves, etc. The smoked salmon is nice in that it is very plain, not sugared up like a lot of hot smoked salmon you find. They are nice and meaty. But sometimes you get a bad fishy one now and then (we hot smoke our own sometimes, and this happens when the fish you started out with isn't fresh, or the smoked salmon has been sitting around at fluctuating temps), you just have to check for the best/freshest dates, and hope for the best. Slab bacon can be streaky or eighty percent pure fat depending on the batch. We prefer lean streaky bacon with more meat, so when bacon is more pure fat, the staff is pretty accommodating and will dig through the pile to select the leaner cuts if you request. We used to live next to a German butcher Schaller & Weber and this one doesn't quite have the quality and taste in it's meat both cured and fresh, but on the other hand has a lot of packaged imports we like. A lot of meats on display look and smell old, turnover for some things aren't good so use your judgement. For example some weeks pancetta looks plump and beautiful, and cooks up nicely, other times pancetta looks not quite as nice, and on those days it gives off a piggy odor and taste. Do check expiration dates, we have routinely found snack foods that expired six months ago or more, or are about to expire in a week.
I was able to find blood sausages at this store!!! Yay... I posted a photo of my cooked sausage too lol. They observe a strict social distancing policy and only allow 1 person per household and could be 5 people at a time which is very good!!! I know a lot of people complaining at the line but dont listen to them, theyre just old and grumpy haha. They have plenty or european products and other games like rabbit, boar, elk, duck and venison. Different types of sausages, hams, head cheese and snacks.
I love this place! I have been going here, and the original one on San Antonio road since the 80s. Amazing meats, tons of sausages, and smoked ham hocks and bacon. Here are some photos of my Dittmer's meats smoked ham hocks slow cooked with pinto beans and some lively corn bread.
Best sausage and german salami. Leberkäse (especially the one that you can cook yoursef - frozen one) is awesome. Small frankfurters, Knockwurst, white bratwurst, weisswurst are our favorites. I also buy ground meat and steak here; flank is very good and good price too. Thank you for staying open with very careful and healthy rules in store to follow. Prost!
My husband is German and this is THE PLACE he loves to go for food, he's so proud of this store. and they had the book I was buying later this year FOR FREEEEEEE
Tuesday before thanks giving there was a 20 person line out the door, but they still had what I needed (idk about turkey, order that 1.5 weeks in advance (check the website for the date)) …
Only reason it's a 3 it bc the last couple of times I ask the meat to be cut thin, I even tell them I don't care if it falls apart. Well, I get it home and it's thick! one time it was thick on 1 side and thin on another. It is just …
Great butcher with a wide selection of excellent quality meats. The COVID rules are strict (which is good), including only one family member (no negotiation). I witnessed families being turned away. So if you going with family make sure only one person lines up to go in.
Great selection of meats. I especially appreciate the German brats. They are made onsite. There aren’t many places to buy them in the Bay Area.
Best butcher shop in the Bay Area. Incredibly good smoked sausages and fresh sausages as well as pastrami and other award-winning meats.
Friendly staffs, amazing quality meats. Their lamb sausage is worth to eat!! I love it
I drove from the East Bay as I had an appointment at PA that day. There was a specific cut of pork that I wanted to get but didn't see it displayed. The staff asked the butcher in the back and was told that they're not available until the …
I visited the Wurst-Haus yesterday and bought several types of sausage and salami to taste each and decide which would be our favorite for future purchases. After tasting with my family and my daughter’s family, we could not find the best …
Their hours on google aren’t accurate and they will randomly close the store. I’ve tried to go 3 separate times on different weekends (saturdays) during normal biz hours and it’s always closed.
I hesitate on this one - giving a place 5 stars, wondering if it is truly that wonderful or is it the fact that I am 450 miles away and miss it. Will my review impact the lines the next time I go (probably not because there are already some …
