Dakota Butcher

I should preface this with I am only rating this business as an eatery and not as a whole. I was working with a Madison local and it was lunch time. When I asked him where we should go he said, “let’s go to the butcher” so that’s where we went. Apparently these lunch specials change daily, his personal favorite was one day when he went it when they were serving ribs. On the day we went, they were serving pulled pork sandwiches and a very generous portion of meatloaf. There was also a cookie, not pictured because it was hidden under other items, in the to go box. Pretty reasonable meal for $10! I’m glad I went with a local my first time, the order/pay process is a bit unconventional. I kept thinking we’d get our food and pay at the counter we got our food from so I was kind of standing there waiting for someone to take my money, turns out you pay at the register in the middle of butcher shop, not at the counter where you get your food. An “order here” & “pay here” sign would definitely help new customers with the experience. Another thing, this is pickup only, there are no tables to sit and eat at. We ended up driving back to the hospital we were working at and sitting at some tables they have outside there. Food was good! Definitely not fast food, more like real home cooking. Service was also good. There are all kinds of meats displayed including a wide variety of beef sticks, my personal kryptonite. I need to go back because after paying for my food and getting in my car, I realized I didn’t have a drink. I don’t know if they didn’t have any (I have a hard time believing that) or if I totally missed them. I don’t hardly get out of any store without getting a drink because usually they’re right by the register. Either I missed it or they could be more strategically placed for people coming to get food but between that and the no tables thing,this is definitely a butcher shop first, eatery second. But, if you want a good meal at a reasonable price and don’t mind finding somewhere to go or eating in your car, it’s definitely worth a try if you’re in the Madison area.

Stopped in today, hoping to get fresh tiger meat. It looks a little off today and I asked if it was fresh today she said no it was made yesterday. I changed my order from a half a pound to a quarter of a pound because I didn’t know if it would really be that good. When she went to weigh it, her first pinch was almost exactly a quarter of a pound. It was a little bit over, but I wasn’t gonna say anything. But then I watched her roll her eyes and huff. She added a second pinch so that it was way over a quarter of a pound. Other than that, I really enjoy this shop and they do have reasonable prices. But honestly, I probably won’t come back because I don’t wanna deal with that woman ever again.

Good steaks and hamburgers. The stuffed mushrooms are really good also.

We didn't buy any other products so the stars are only reviewing the meal. I had just crossed into "I'm starving" territory so 2 stars might even be generous. It wasn't great. Greasy and cold. The pork was too salty & very dry, potatoes were rubbery and not much flavor, both were cold. The pumpkin desert had citrus notes like it had been orange fluff in another life. It was expensive for the quality. If you think about eating here, remember "You have food at home." 😀

Went to use their gift card, yes it is older (black) I was told that the card was not accepted anymore. I asked if there was a way I could get the money off of it and in to a different one. It was a short and snotty "No" they guy I spoke with was very rude, and acted like he didn't care that even though I wanted to try their products not having been there. He just gave me short answers that were VERY rude and snotty. One star shouldn't be given. Now I am out of the money that is on the card, and I don't see my family ever going to dakota butcher. My first impression was not good.

The best quality meats in the area. Grab a pizza while you’re there too. Great selection and service. Well worth the drive from Sioux Falls for a great steak! You won’t be disappointed!

Great tarter tot casserole special! Also got ribs! They were very expensive for quality and what I got for a quantity.
